Iiyama cityShinto Shrines & Buddhist temples

Originally built in Chikuma City during the 13th century, the temple was moved to its current location in 1672. After burning down twice, the main temple hall was rebuilt in 1780 to create a structure about the same size as Iiyama's central Chuonji Temple. The temple's small buddha is said to come from Warring States Period warlord Uesugi Kenshin, granted as a token of appreciation to the ferryman who carried his troops safely over the river and away from enemies in persuit during the battle of Kawanakajima. The temple's collection also includes a statue of Shotoku Taishi, a statesman from the 7th century, which has been designated a prefectural treasure.
